I used to enjoy thinking of the world in terms of foes, archrivals, and mortal enemies, and I still enjoy the words that name with such precision those toward whom we feel the opposite of love. In reading the submissions for Six Little Things issue #6, I encountered a variety of interpretations of the phrase, "mortal enemies." Perhaps the most deeply engaging considerations moved past the exaggerated expression of personal animus that the phrase typically calls up to a broader meditation on the human condition, our consciousness of the inevitability of death, our ultimate "mortal enemy."
